The Albemarle High School Crew had a fantastic day at the Virginia Rowing Championships on Saturday on the Occoquan reservoir in Fairfax Station. AHS came home with three state championships and two second place finishes. Bringing home gold and their respective state titles were women’s double (Emmie Wuensch and Bri Knight), women’s lightweight double (Dhara Liyange and Olivia Hall) and women’s junior quad (Hillary Lewis, Mia Llang, Ryleigh Katstra and Rebecca Hasson). Silver medals went to men’s double (Jake Pierce and Hugh Rickard) and men’s junior quad (Joe Angevine, Aidan Johnson, Zack Arzouni and Charlie Butler ). All varsity boats made it to finals and 14 athletes (out of 20) are state champions or state runner ups. Next for the team, top crews will travel to Philadelphia for the Stotesbury Cup followed by the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championships regatta. Since it’s inception in 2012, the team has won state championships nearly every year and remains a top competitor in Stotesbury, Nationals and fall races such as the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston. The team is coached by Cathy Coffman.
